MIA TINGLEY
ABOUT
Hi! I’m Mia Tingley, a junior studying Textile and Fashion Design with Entrepreneurship and Studio Art certificates at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I am passionate about functional design, sustainable and high quality production, and innovation within textile design. I have taken coursework in sewing/garment construction, pattern making, Adobe Suite, trend forecasting, fashion illustration, textile science, weaving, product development, and print design.

WOVEN PROJECTS:
The Pinwheel Tote
A fun, everyday structured tote made for the stylish and relaxed consumer. Constructed with a graphic hand woven patterned fabric, this bag is the ultimate accessory to any outfit. Whether to spice up a classic and causal look, or the perfect addition to a bold and innovative ensemble, this bag does it all.
Project included trend research, weave drafting, weaving, bag design/sketching, pattern drafting, and sewn construction.

Watercloth Series
An abstract water cloth series inspired by the the organic motifs and complementary color combinations found in water and oceanic environments. Practiced reactive dyeing techniques and weave drafting.

Color and Material Samples
All students in the studio warped 7 yards of yarn in a different material or color. With a variety of the warp yarns, I was able to weave on each loom, exploring color combinations and using different materials including wool, hemp, linen, and silk.

PRINT AND PATTERN:
Taste of Summertime
Girls' Summer Collection.
Gouache and color pencil drawing later made into repeat pattern on Illustrator while still keeping its original handmade nature. I leaned into the painterly character of the piece and bright color scheme to capture the childlike whimsy and joy I wanted this collection to embody.

Water Lilies
Women's swimwear collection inspired by carefree summers spent on the lake. I started this piece by painting water lilies and then stamping them onto paper. I then went back into the piece with colored pencil to add texture and accentuate the shapes. The vibrant colors, organic motifs and hand drawn style of this pattern embody the creativity and freedom of this collection's customer base.

Dancing Orchid
Girls' bedding collection inspired by the ditsy floral pattern, dancing orchids, WGSN trend forecasting research, and Djerf Avenue prints. Embracing the ditsy floral prints origin and leaning into the idea of "small luxury", this collection's design leans into a playful energy and provides "escapism", an idea associated with the origins of the ditsy floral print as well as WGSNs trend forecasting.

Loons
In this print I wanted to encapsulate the feeling of tranquility, wildness, and spirituality that loons are often associated with. The simple background and limited color scheme allow this piece to be bold and unexpected, yet still timeless and classic; the perfect subtle detail.

EMBROIDERY:

These pieces were made as an artist appreciation project, and sought inspiration from the artist Abdoulaye Konate, specifically his piece titled "Marrakech" (left). I sought direct inspiration from the color palette, but additionally recreated the motion of strips of fabric in his work through the repeated vertical satin stitch. My composition however was more inspired by the broad concept of communication throughout his work particularly though his choice of materials. My designs are abstract interpretations of hypothetical motifs and symbols used as a form of communication.
